Women's Champions League: Arsenal Stun Real Madrid to reach semi -final

Three goals in 13 second half minutes were sufficient for Arsenal women to destroy a shortage with two goals in the first leg against Real Madrid and progress to the semi-final of the Champions League.

Alessia Russo scored both sides of a Mariona Caldentey goal in a 3-0 win to set up a delicious draw against eight times winners Lyon in the last four.

Russo had excluded two goals for offside on a memorable night for the Gunners in the Emirates, witness by 22,517 supporters, a record audience for an English team in a quarterfinals of a Women’s Champions League.

Real had given himself the benefit last week in Madrid thanks to goals from Linda Caicedo and Athena del Castillo and wanted to protect that leadership in North Londs on Wednesday.

But Renee Sleers’s side turned out to be worthy than their victory with a tough, astute version for their home fans who caused jubilating parties on the full -time whistle signal.

After a scoreless first half, the hosts took the lead almost immediately after the restart when a Pin-Point Cross of Chloe Kelly Russo found that stuck home.

The second goal came only three minutes later when a new delivery of the impressive Kelly was met by Caldentey, where the Spaniard led her header past Misa Rodriguez in the real goal.

And the comeback was completely just before the hour when Steph Catley de Freekick from Katie McCabe led over the goal again, where Russo waited to jump on the bouncing ball.

From there, Russo had omitted two goals, but in the end the three goals turned out to be enough to see Arsenal, who are currently training with eight points in the WSL title race, until the semi-final of a competition that can be realistically their only shot on Silverware this season.

Arsenal Men’s team hopes to simulate that performance if they meet Los Blancos in the Champions League last eight in April.
