How do the EFL play -offs work?
The Sky Bet EFL play-offs are an annual series of competitions to determine the latest promotional places within each division of the EFL.
Introduced for the first time in 1987, the play-offs are used to separate the four teams that end directly under the automatic promotional places in EFL divisions through a series of play-off competitions.
In the championship, the team meets the team in sixth place and the next fourth, fourth place will take the club in the fifth in two -legged semi -final.
The first stage is held in the house of the team that ended the lowest, with the second organized by the team that reached the higher position.
The winner is decided to be aggregated and will continue to a one -off competition to decide who is being promoted at Wembley Stadium. Goals are not used.

Are fines and extra time being used in the play -off final?
Extra time and, if necessary, fines are used if the aggregated Scoreline is the same after the end of the regular time in the second legs of the semi -final.
The final also uses extra time and penalties if the teams are the same.

The first round of matches in 2025/26 is in the weekend of August 16, 2025. The latter all starts at the same time on 24 May 2026.
No rounds will take place within 60 hours in succession and there will be no fixture on December 24.
