Southampton -Baas Ivan Juric is desperate for his players to prove that they are not the “worst team in the history of the Premier League”.
The saints have passed a miserable season, currently sitting in the Premier League and 17 points of safety after just two victories throughout the season.
So far they only have nine points of their 29 games, two shy of Derby County’s total of 11 in 2007-08 and have only collected three points since December, they are realizing the risk of achieving that count.
“The team must compete and try to do our best. We really have to be motivated,” said Juric, whose Southampton Side-Gastheer FA Cup semi-finalists Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
“I don’t want us to be the worst team in the history of the Premier League.
“If we can’t be the last on the table, we have to do our best, so at the moment this is our goal.
“I think we are in good condition, we can do it and we will try to win the game.”
Juric Coy in the future
Juric took over from Russell Martin in December, but did not prevent the plight situation of the promoted side, while the south coast side is preparing for another seaosn back in the championship.
The former Torino and Roma boss stopped not to come to the club this season with his future and said he was focused on the immediate challenges.
“I think if you want to make something, you have to have people with a strong idea, know what they want and start building something, creating something,” he said.
“Sometimes you try to do it best with the players you have.”
Worst Premier League teams ever
Derby’s notorious season 2007-08 is the current worst count ever of 38 games of a Premier League, but the other parties are to collect low points.
Before Derby it was Sunderland that had the unwanted tag of the worst team in history after collecting measly 15 points during the 2005-06 season.
Sheffield United went close to the end of lower than that in 2023-24, the same as Huddersfield collected in 2018-19.
The current Champions League quart finalists Aston Villa will also fall as one of the worst flights after the chaotic campaign in 2015-16, in which they were able to collect only 17 points when they first stopped the Premier League.
