Real Madrid against Arsenal: the four nights that give Spanish giants hope for a ‘remontada’

Real Madrid will need a monumental comeback tomorrow night if they have to destroy a 3-0 deficit on the first leg against Arsenal.

A team that comes back from three goals in the Champions League has only happened four times before, which proves how difficult a task it is, but also shows that it can be done.

Here we look at the previous occasions, and you will see Madrid’s Arch Rivals Barcelona function heavily.

Deportivo La Coruna 4-0 AC Milan (Sport won 5-4 on aggregated) -2004

The original ‘Remontada’ was a breathtaking comeback in which Barcelona saw PSG in a round-of-16 draw.

The side of Luis Enrique was completely flooded in the first game in the Parc des Princes while the home team rode a 4-0 win.

And there seemed to be little danger to the Parisiens when Edinson Cavani scored in Camp Nou to put PSG 5-3 done with 28 minutes to go after Luis Suárez, a goal of Layvin Kurzawa and a Lionel Messi-Penalty had given Barca renewed hope.

But the Catalans were not ready.

Neymar converted a free kick after 88 minutes and then scored, then controversially, again from the penalty spot in the 91st minute after Suarez went into the box. There was still time for Sergio Roberto to puncture the ball four minutes later to generate wild scenes.

Roma 3-0 Barcelona (Roma won 4-3 to total) -2018

Barcelona was on the receiving side 12 months later, because Messi, Suarez and Co could not prevent the Serie A-side from coming back from a 3-1 defeat in Camp Nou.

Edin Dzeko struck early to give the stages Olimpico Crowd Hope and the noise was when Daniele de Rossi converted a fine of the second half.

Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona (Liverpool won 4-3 on aggregated) -2019

Barca was reversed again in 2019 on an exciting evening in Anfield.

The two goals of Messi, including a beautiful free kick, and a goal from former Red Suarez, Barca had given control of this semi -final. But Barcelona did not realize what they would touch on Merseyside.

Divock Origi gave Liverpool early hope, but the faith got Momentum when Georginio Wijnaldum scored twice in 122 seconds in the second half.

Barca feared a repeat of their Roma capitulation and it passed when the fast corner of Trent Alexander-Arnold Origi enabled to sweep the ball past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
