Nico Harrison ‘Reed Weg’ Dirk Nowitzki well before Doncic Trade

Nico Harrison pushed Dirk Nowitzki away from Mavs franchise

Dallas Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison made decisions that Dirk Nowitzki forced to distance themselves from the franchise. This was well before Luka Doncic was traded.

In an ESPN exclusive, Insider Tim Macmahon described how Harrison Casey Smith, director of the MAV’s Health and Performance, was a clear bending point for the franchise in the summer of 2023.

Smith joined Dallas in 2004 as a Head Athletic Trainer and was promoted to performing ranks in 2019. Nowitzki credit Smith with him to play for 21 seasons and regards Smith as one of his best friends.

Shortly after Nowitzki was anchored in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, Harrison contacted Smith and said they had to meet each other. Smith refused and quoted that he was in Ohio to be with his sick mother in the last weeks of her life.

In response, Harrison set up a video conference meeting in which he illuminated Smith from his duties.

As a result, Nowitzki, who was served as a senior adviser to Mark Cuban, no longer wanted to be involved in the inner operation of the basketball activities of the franchise. He now just regards himself as a “mavs fan”.

Smith is currently working for the New York Knicks as their vice president of sports medicine.

Lara Beth Seager also plays a key role in the story. She is Nowitzki’s old special projects manager and became Doncic’s Business Manager after he was introduced by Nowitzki.

Before Smiths shooting, Doncic and Seager Real Madrid physiotherapist Javier Barrio Calvo. They also hired the Slovenian national team power coach Anze Macek after Doncic struggled to shake off a quadriceps injury in the summer of 2023.

Nowadays it is not uncommon for NBA players to build their own athletic performance team.

The plan was that the duo worked with Smith. However, it was Jeremy Holsopple, who became the chief as athletic performance director after the fire of Smith. Casey Spangler also worked as a manual therapist.

Holsopple and Spangler were synchronized with the new employees together in their first season. Doncic on average a competition-leading 33.9 points, 9.2 rebounds and 9.8 assists in 2023-24 and became third in MVP voting.

That was not enough for Harrison, who believed that Doncic had arrived during the season. That was not going well with Doncic, Seaver or the rest of his team, including agent Bill Duffy. Holsopple and Spangler were released by Harrison and replaced by Johann Bilborough and Keith Belton.

If it got bad before, they would get worse.

Bilborough repeatedly clashed with Doncic’s team on body maintenance and return dates, among other things. Doncic kept Belton, who was reportedly considered an unqualified, glorified cheerleader.

For example, when Doncic, earlier this season, saved his calf on Christmas Day, Bilborough believed that a timeline of two to three weeks was sufficient. Doncic’s team from Calvo and MacEk was now firm at six weeks.

As disagreements remained during the recovery of Doncic, Harrison was frustrated that Doncic did not rode with the team for road races and gave priority to recovery in the facility of Dallas.

With Doncic after a return, Harrison Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Marketf Morris traded on the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a first round pick.

On 39-43 Dallas finished the 10th season in the West and missed the play-offs after a final run last spring.

The Lakers finished third in the west with a record of 50-32 and play the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round.
