Liverpool 3-1 Southampton: Reds come from behind to 16 points clear

Liverpool organized a second half of comeback to achieve a 3-1 victory over Southampton in Anfield.

The visitors took a shock just before half -time by Will Smallbone, but a three -minute burst early in the second half changed the game in favor of the Reds.

Goals from Nunez and Mohamed Salah, the latter scored twice from the penalty spot, ensured that the side of Arne Slot collected all three points and 16 clearly moved.

Southampton arrived in Anfield as serious underdogs and Liverpool dominated the possession from the start.

Curtis Jones had an early chance, but dragged his shot wide, while Nunez also tested Aaron Ramsdale with a tame effort from a distance.

In the first half of the interruption time, Southampton made a defense of a defensive decay.

A quick complicated in Van Ryan Manning caught Liverpool’s Backline, with Smallbone Pounding on a miscommunication between Alisson and Virgil van Dijk to close at home.

When the match added time came in, Liverpool received another penalty after VAR intervened to judge Yukinari Sugawara’s handball under pressure from Diaz.

Salah stepped up again and switched his efforts in the upper corner, sealed the victory and took his seasonal number to 27 goals.

The dominant display of Liverpool was reflected in the statistics and registered an XG of 4.07 compared to Southampton’s 0.31.

The victory ensures that the Reds are contrary to several games, with a crucial Champions League second stage against PSG on the Horizon, followed by the League Cup final against Newcastle United.

In the meantime, Southampton continues their fight to prevent relegation, even though the opportunities are stacked against them.
