Lee Carsley frustrated after England under 21 held by Slovenia in Goalless Stalemate

Lee Carsley

Lee Carsley admitted his frustration after his English under-21-side of England was held this afternoon by Slovenia to a scoreless draw.

The young lions started slowly but dominated after that with just a series of fine saves by goalkeeper Martin Turk who kept England at a distance.

Turk’s best rescue came in the second half of injury time, causing a Jack Hinshelwood header to tilted the bar.

We lacked quality – Carsley

Carsley said Channel 4: “It was frustrating. It was not for the lack of effort, we sometimes missed a bit of quality. We had some really good chances and if we had taken one, I think we had won the game comfortably.

“We also have to give Slovenia credit. They have made it very difficult for us, especially the way they started and the way they set up in terms of having the ball.

“We didn’t start quickly and we were under pressure in the first 15 minutes. It was important that we did not admit, so that was really positive.”

England now has four points of their two games in group B and knows that a point against Germany will be enough to see them on Wednesday.

“The goal is to be eligible for the group and we are still on track,” added Carsley. “It is really important that the players recover; I think we will definitely refresh the team for the Germany game.”

Mcatee shifts attention to the last group game

Captain James McATee also quickly focused his attention on the Germany competition.

“We are disappointed, we have come here to win, but it is a point and we are still in charge of [qualification]”The Midfielder of Manchester City said.

“I don’t think we were inadequate in general, it was just the chances – I missed a few, there were a number of large saves from the keeper. On another day we got away with three points.

“We are going back and socialize now, see our families for a while and we are ready for the next game.”
