The friends and family of Halyna Hutchins don’t want them to be a “footnote” in the Rust To shoot.
That was the motivation of director Rachel Mason to make the documentary Last Take: Rest and the Story of HalynaStreaming on Hulu from 11 March. Mason was a friend and employee of Hutchins, the director of photography who was accidentally shot and killed on the set of the Alec Baldwin Western on October 21, 2021. Mason said the widower of Hutchins, Matthew, asked her to make the film. He serves as an executive producer.
“As often as her name felt like a footnote in a head, an unthinkable reduction of the person who was so much more than a victim for us,” said Mason in her director’s statement.

Alec Baldwin, who held the gun when it went off, was accused of involuntary manslaughter, but his case was rejected in July 2024 (Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office)
However, the focus is really on how the tragedy unfolded with missed rifle controls and weapon abuse, resulting in criminal charges against arms equipment Hannah Gutierrez-Rijd (which was convicted for involuntary manslaughter in 2024), Baldwin (whose involuntary-powered dame dame dame dame) Dame director Dame director Dame director Dame director Dame director Dame director Dame in 2024). weapon).
Rust Director-writer Joel Souza, who survived the shooting that came from a live round that was loaded in a prop pistool used by Baldwin, appears in the documentary and said last week on a display that he was “surprised” by the last film, in the hope that it was “a little more about Halyn”.
Souza, Halls, New Mexico Special public prosecutor Kari Morrissey and the cast and crew members are among those who give new interviews in the doc. It also looks at how the film finally ended in 2023, and kept as much as possible of her images as they could and said it was done for her.
This is what we have learned by looking at it.
Frances Fisher claimed the weapons of the beginning of the beginning wrong
The actress remembered her first interaction with Gutierrez-Vreed and said that she spoke with Baldwin on the set when the then 24-year-old armor interrupted them while hitting ‘a poor weapons’.
She “just went away,” Fisher said. “I thought: it is very unsafe to walk around with a whole group of weapons in your hand. Have they erased? Why are you doing this? Alec … seemed a bit, you know, “what does she do?” [When] I found out she was the armor. I thought: Wow. “
Gutierrez-Vreed had little experience as an armor, but she praised to be trained personally by her stepfather, Thell Reed, a well-known arms adviser and sniper in the film world.
“The carelessness that Hannah showed that first day,” said Fisher. “I wish I had said something to her and I wish I had said something to Alec, but I don’t want to make waves. … would that have changed something? That’s what gnaws at me. “
There was ‘chaos’ on the set of the independent film
Jonas Huerta, from the camera department, said: “Things started to feel” when Baldwin, also a producer, arrived in Santa Fe, Nm, while Baldwin “did nothing wrong”, there was a “tonal change” with the pace of production that became faster.
Actor Devon Werkheiser said there is never enough time or money for an indies set, and he was no different. He said, “You always work against the chaos.”
Souza agreed that the schedule ‘sucked’, with long days on the set.
A big problem, however, was that the camera crew that Hutchins had collected had ended the track on the morning of Hutchins’ death. In his letter of resignation, cameraman Lane Luper called on problems with arms safety, including two negligent gun discharge on October 16.
Souza said there was “disharmony” between production and the camera team. Huerta said they felt safety problems that they marked were ignored: “Nobody really shaved us.”
Because the camera crew from 11 to two people is shrinking – and it was the day of the biggest shootout of the film – they remained chased. There was no ‘Video Village’, an area away from the set with monitors where the director, cinematographer and others would see the scene that was filmed. Instead, the monitors had to be brought into the church – and that is why Hutchins and Souza were there on the path of Baldwin’s gun when it went off.
Mason said that the only thing between Hutchins and the gun were ‘her own hands’ when Baldwin pulled out the gun as he practiced his scene. The round that discharged through the body of Hutchins and in Souza.
Souza said he felt that someone “hit me in the shoulder with a bat”
The director took off his coat and asked, “Am I bleeding?” He was placed on the ground opposite Hutchins, and they “locked eyes” on her last moments.
Halls said that Hutchins told him: “I can’t feel my legs.”

Hutchins was taken to the hospital by Medevac Helicopter, but died en route. Souza was taken to another hospital with an ambulance and survived.
Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Tim Benavidez said the set was in “complete chaos” when he arrived on stage. Many images of that day have been included in the film, including a bewildered Baldwin and Gutierrez-ride in a state of almost hysteria.
Actor Josh Hopkins said the cast found that Hutchins had died by reading it online
The cast and the crew were told that they had to gather in a tent area and not discuss the shooting with the press. A medicine arrived and everyone told that Hutchins, whom they knew he was injured more seriously, “it will be fine,” Hopkins said.
Werkheiser said it was “so f **** ed” that they found out with both the police and the production members present that Hutchins had died of an online news article.
“This can’t be right,” Hopkins reminded himself when he saw the head, but it was.
Hopkins said that Baldwin seemed as if “his guts had been torn.”
Osha researcher said that ‘there is no way’ that the criminal investigation should have been limited to 3 people
While Gutierrez-Vreed said she was loading the gun with ‘dummies’, which look like real bullets but not shooting, there was a living round in the weapon and five others found on the set. She was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2024.

Hallen, whose task included checking the gun as it was transferred from armor to actor to actor, said he “saw what looked like dummyr rounds” when Gutierrez-ride turned the room for him, but he acknowledged that he did not do a thorough control. He did not argue for the negligent use of a fatal weapon in 2023.
Baldwin, who claims that the gun went off without him getting the tractor, was twice charged with involuntary manslaughter, but his case was rejected with prejudice in July 2024.
Lorenzo Montoya of the New Mexico Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSH), which carried out a six -month investigation into the shooting, making production a fine for deliberate safety failure, said in the film that he was “too narrow” in the scope for those three people.
“You cannot have a culture that comes from an employee at a low level, an actor and one member of the management when there is there [were] More hands in the game. “
Montoya said that the safety aspect was missing and that the first arms retirement should have been an “immediate red flag” for producers to “stop the work. … you can’t just ignore it.”
Gutierrez-Vreed was a part-time armor and had a second job as an assistant props manager. She received an e -mail from production and said that she spent too much time on her armored tasks while she was admonished because she left a plug -gun without supervision.

“Every accident is preceded by a series of failures, so we have issued a deliberate quote,” said Montoya. “There was enough … knowledge, warning, complaints, all these red flags and management said: ‘Let’s just continue.“We call that” just indifference. ” Hannah is the symptom of a disease. She’s not the disease. “
The special public prosecutor had ‘reservations’ about the criminal cases
Morrissey said that she was “pronounced … Reflections on whether or not a criminal prosecution in this case was appropriate”, but after hearing how living rounds were brought to the set, about discharging in the days before and Baldwin’s alleged incorrect act of weapons, she agreed.
While she successfully persecuted Gutierrez-Vreed, who is in prison for 18 months, Baldwin’s trial was a disaster, in which the judge found that evidence was remembered to the defense. Baldwin was deleted immediately and cannot be tried again.
“Hannah Gutierrez had a job,” said Morrissey. “The primary goal of her task is to ensure that there is no live round on that film set, that it is not mixed with dummy rounds that all those rounds are tested before they are put into the gun. That didn’t happen. “

She continued: “As far as Alec Baldwin is concerned, he did not have to catch the gun during that rehearsal, and he was certainly not obliged to pull the tractor of the gun. And there are indications that he did those things. ‘
Baldwin maintained that he never pulled the tractor and accidentally discharged it.
Rust In the end it was ready, although outside of New Mexico. Only rubber guns were used together with fake ammunition. Bianca Cline took over as a cinematograph and kept as many scenes of Hutchins as possible. Andrew Wert, an experienced armor, took over those tasks. Hutchins’ husband came as an executive producer after settling a civil lawsuit with Baldwin. Souza and the others – like Hutchins’s mother – spoke about how it was important to finish the project for her. The completed film premiered in November, three years after the recordings.
