Double blow for Bayern Munich, while Davies and Upamecano are seriously injured

Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich has had a double defensive blow with the news that Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano were seriously injured while he had international duty.

Davies tore the cruciate ligament in his right knee during the defeat of Canada of the United States on Sunday and the left back will undergo surgery today.

It is another setback for the 24-year-old, who signed a five-year contract extension last month, with his career destroyed by injuries in the past seasons.

Upamecano played the full 120 minutes when France beat Croatia 2-0 on Sunday evening and even scored the winning penalty in the shoot-out after the two-legged Nations League-equal game was aggregated with 2-2.

But it was later discovered that he had floating excerpts in his left knee that will put him aside for a few weeks.

Davies and Upamecano to miss the seasonal run

It is a terrible timing for Bayern if they look at a domestic and European double.

The men of Vincent Kompany have a six -point lead on defending champion Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga and are also confronted with Inter Milan in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Bayern Board Member for Sport Max Eberl told the club’s official website: “Unfortunately, there is always the risk that players return from international breaks with injuries – this time we have hit particularly hard.

“The absence of Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano weighs heavily on FC Bayern. Phonzy gets all the support he needs on his way to recovery. We will also keep an eye on in the coming weeks and expect that he will be available again soon.

“We have a strong team and will compensate for these absences. We will now grow even closer together. The quality is there to continue to strive for our big goals.”
